Creation and Humility

IN THE BEGINNING, GOD CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH – Genesis 1:1

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH? TELL ME, IF YOU HAVE UNDERSTANDING. WHO DETERMINED ITS MEASUREMENTS – SURELY YOU KNOW! OR WHO STRETCHED THE LINE UPON IT? ON WHAT WERE ITS BASES SUNK, OR WHO LAID IT’S CORNERSTONE..? – Job 38:4-6

Job has had it bad. Very bad. He has lost property, business, reputation, health and most significantly – loved ones. Unsurprisingly, and yet still remarkably, he turns to God honestly with his grief.

Often in the midst of pain we run from God, hide from Him. But God invites us to honestly lament and cry out to Him in our suffering. He is big enough to handle our questions.

And yet, in suffering, we are not given licence to sin. Despite our pain, our hurt, our anger, our frustration, God reminds us that we are to remain humble before Him. We are to remember His authority as the creator of the universe.

Why?

Because there is infinitely more that God knows about this world and it’s people than we do. He laid the foundation of the world, and nothing happens in it, good or evil, without His sovereign hand permitting it.

Because in doing so we receive comfort and tested faith, which brings us to a position where we lack nothing required for perseverance (James 1:2-3).

Rather than letting this fact, regarding God’s sovereignty, anger us further and provoking a proud response. May we seek the humility which brings great comfort. God is God.

He has set the cornerstone of Christ in this world, that we might turn to Him and be saved. That we might trust in Him and receive healing. We are set apart for His divine blessing ‘before the foundation of the world’ in love (Ephesians 1:4).

In our pain, pain we will inevitably face, may we turn to God the creator of the world. Who has laid Christ, the ‘man of sorrows’, to be the foundation of our faith.
